ABSTRACT

Several classes of genes required for full pathogenicity of Xanthomonas campestris pathovar campestris have been characterised. These include 1. structural genes encoding extracellular plant degrading enzymes, 2. genes involved in synthesis of extracellular polysaccharide, 3. a multigene system encoding a secretion system for extracellular enzymes, 4. complex regulatory systems controlling enzyme and EPS synthesis, 5. hrp genes required for pathogenicity and for ability to induce a hypersensitive response on resistant non-host plants, 6. an avirulence gene which interacts with Arabidopsis thaliana, and 7. genes whose function is unknown. Brassica plants respond to challenge with Xanthomonas by differential expression of many genes, including genes encoding hydrolases such as ß-1,3 glucanase and chitinases. These show characteristic patterns of expression depending on the genotype of the challenging bacterium. The effect on glucanase induction produced by using certain classes of bacterial mutant to challenge the plants is described. More... »

These include 1. structural genes encoding extracellular plant degrading enzymes, 2. genes involved in synthesis of extracellular polysaccharide, 3. a multigene system encoding a secretion system for extracellular enzymes, 4. complex regulatory systems controlling enzyme and EPS synthesis, 5. hrp genes required for pathogenicity and for ability to induce a hypersensitive response on resistant non-host plants, 6. an avirulence gene which interacts with Arabidopsis thaliana, and 7. genes whose function is unknown. Brassica plants respond to challenge with Xanthomonas by differential expression of many genes, including genes encoding hydrolases such as ß-1,3 glucanase and chitinases. These show characteristic patterns of expression depending on the genotype of the challenging bacterium. The effect on glucanase induction produced by using certain classes of bacterial mutant to challenge the plants is described.
