AUTHORS ABSTRACTWe present measurements of the sky background collected at the ESO — La Silla Observatory. Our data include both the optical and near-infrared astronomical bands. We discuss the major contributions to the sky background and show that La Silla observatory is one of the best sites available for astronomical observations. The effect of light pollution from nearby towns is still relatively negligible. We point out the importance of preserving this situation. More... »
