ABSTRACT

Tropospheric ozone (O3) is one of the most detrimental air pollutants known to affect forest trees. The negative impact of O3 on biomass production and physiological functions have been investigated in a number of experiments (Matyssek et al. 1995, Sandermann et al. 1997, Skärby et al. 1998). Field observations in the Bavarian Forest, Germany (Baumgarten et al. 2000) and in Fennoscandia (Sellden et al. 1997) also implied that ambient O3 might affect forest trees. For conifers at the alpine timberline however, unambiguous evidence of O3 injury did not exist, although O3 regimes are significantly higher when compared to those in Fennoscandia (Skärby et al. 1998) and to low elevation sites in Central Europe (Smidt 1998).
