ABSTRACT

The advantages of interlocking for creating switchable chemical systems is discussed and reviewed, and contrasted with intertwined threaded complexes. The possibilities for obtaining interlocked superstructures — which necessarily require control of three-dimensional assembly processes — in the solid state from catenane components is discussed, and crystalline interpenetrating networks are reviewed.
