ABSTRACT

In this review article, we shall discuss various approaches to the synthesis of multi-component molecular systems, based on the use of transition metals as templates. By mixing appropriate molecular strings and rings with metals, under strictly defined conditions, various complexes can be obtained. They consist of cycles threaded by strings, of double-stranded helices or other types of systems. The compounds formed can be used as precursors for making topologically novel systems, some of them being also electro- and photoactive. In the present paper we shall focus on three aspects of the assembling and templating effects used in our group in the course of the last few years. The systems discussed will be (i) cycles threaded by molecular strings not bearing any bulky groups at their extremities, (ii) [2] and [3]-rotaxanes with porphyrins as stoppers and (iii) molecular trefoil knots. In the present paper we shall focus on three aspects of the assembling and templating effects used in our group in the course of the last few years. The systems discussed will be (i) cycles threaded by molecular strings not bearing any bulky groups at their extremities, (ii) [2] and [3]-rotaxanes with porphyrins as stoppers and (iii) molecular trefoil knots.
