ABSTRACT

In 1972 Buckley et al. 1 described a syndrome in two adolescents, in which an undue susceptibility to infections was associated with hyper-immunoglobulinaemia E. These patients suffered from chronic dermatitis and from recurrent subcutaneous, pulmonary, and joint abscesses. Repeatedly, Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans. could be cultured from these lesions. One year later, Clark et al. 2 described a similar syndrome and found this condition to be associated with a defect in the neutrophil chemotactic responsiveness. Since then, high IgE titres in combination with a predisposition to bacterial infections and defective PMN chemotaxis have been reported in a variety of other defects (for review, see Discussion of Reference 3). In most instances these conditions were accompanied by depressed cellular and humoral immunity. More... »
