ABSTRACT

Frictional-force microscopy images of graphite are calculated by a numerical simulation using an atomistic model comprised of a tip connected to a cantilever and a substrate surface. We find a remarkable change of the FFM image pattern depending on the cantilever stiffness. This image change is interpreted based on the two-dimensional ratcheting motion of the tip atom, and a fundamental process of atomic-scale friction is clarified. More... »
