ABSTRACT

Bone marrow transplantation (BMT) from unrelated donors is being used increasingly for the treatment of leukemia and other haematopoietic disorders [1]. However, use of HLA phenotypically identical unrelated donors rather than genotypically identical siblings is associated with an increased incidence and severity of graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) [2-4]. This may be due to the presence of HLA disparities not identified because of the limited resolution of current HLA matching techniques [5]. Selection of histocompatible unrelated donors currently relies on tissue typing by serological and biochemical methods at HLA-A and HLA-B and molecular techniques at the DRB1 and DQB1 loci.
