ABSTRACT

It is well known (Takayama and Ben-Dor 1986; Takayama 1990; Achasov et al. 1993a) that when a plane shock wave collides with a circular concave wall, the reflected shock wave from the concave wall forms a focus or a caustic at which the pressure and the temperature can be enhanced. Usually regions of high energy density are produced by the focused waves. It has been observed that the shock wave energy for initiation of detonation in a given explosive mixture can substantially decrease when focusing phenomenon is used (Borisov et al. 1990; Chan et al. 1990; Achasov et al. 1993b). It was demonstrated that fast turbulent mixing of hot combustion products with the reactants may lead to the onset of a detonation (Oppenheim 1970; Carnasciali et al. 1991). An interaction of supersonic jets can cause the enhancing of the pressure and the temperature and, consequently, detonation initiation. The present article describes the results of such investigation. More... »
