ABSTRACT

The investigation of the transverse structure of the velocity field in turbulent flow is of great interest because, while the incompressibility relation severely constrains the possible longitudinal structures, it gives no restriction on the transverse variations of the velocity. Also, there is no theoretical equivalent of the Kolmogorov equation that applies to the transverse structure functions, so that their scaling is a priori unknown. Related to this lack of theory is the dearth of experimental transverse data, due to the pointwise nature of standard techniques that can only give access to longitudinal variations using Taylor’s hypothesis. It is only recently that lateral measurements could be performed, using arrays of hot-wire probes, but their spatial resolution is very limited. More... »
