ABSTRACT

We investigate the growth of finite perturbations in fully developed turbulence. Consideration of these quantities is relevant for a priori discussions of the predictability problem of geophysical flows and weather forecasts. In an early pioneering investigation[4] E. Lorenz showed that under natural assumptions and assuming Kolmogorov scaling, the growth rate of finite perturbations scales with perturbation size as λ(δ) ~ δ-γ, where the predictability scaling exponent γ is equal to 2.
