AUTHORS ABSTRACTThe IXth IAPTC Congress has great symbolism in that it is the last one to be held in the 20th century and the 2nd millenium. As such, it provides a valuable opportunity to pause and to assess the contributions of plant biotechnology to the advancement of science and human welfare, and to gain a perspective for the future. It is a particularly significant time for such an assessment because the first products of plant biotechnology for human use have now been introduced into the marketplace, and there is much debate and concern about the uses and impact of this technology on our lives and the environment.
