ABSTRACT

Humic substances are found in all natural waters throughout the world and have significant interaction with cations and other materials in those waters. The complexity of humics as chemical compounds is discussed and methods of characterization evaluated. Humic acids not only are important complexants for cations in natural waters, but also have significant redox properties. The effects of humics both in complexation and redox on actinides in soils and in natural waters is reviewed. A number of models have been proposed to discribe these interactions and to allow geochemical evaluation of the effect of humics on radionuclides which might be accidentally or deliberately discharged into soils and waters.
