ABSTRACT

In microbiology, that branch of biology dealing with microscopically small representatives of all three domains (Archaea, Bacteria and Eukarya), the need for biodiversity research and analysis is even greater than in any other biological science (Amann, 1999). In all groups of microorganisms, so far only a very small part of the whole species diversity is recognized, described, and characterized. Micromycetes cannot be named an exception, because their small size and the complex isolation techniques pose severe difficulties for assessment and monitoring of microscopic fungal communities (Cannon, 1998). The importance of micromycetes in many environments has been documented, but many features of this interesting group are still escaping our attention. More... »
