ABSTRACTThe plastids of higher plants contain a NAD(P)H-plastoquinone-oxidoreductase (NDH complex) which is composed of at least eleven subunits (NDH-A-K) that are homologous to subunits of the bacterial and mitochondrial NADH-ubiquinone-oxidoreductase (complex I, [1]). Though several attempts have been made to isolate the enzyme [2, 3, 4] its exact molecular structure is not known. Three possible functions of the NDH complex in plastid metabolism are currently under discussion: the involvement in i) chloro-respiration [5], ii) cyclic electron transport [6] and iii) in the removal of deleterious oxygen species [7].
