ABSTRACT

The effects of the agitation rate on cell growth in porous microcarrier cultures were discussed. The specific growth rate in porous microcarrier cultures was independent of agitation rates. By estimating the total surface area occupied by cells from the maximum cell density, it was found that not all the surface area of the porous microcarrier was usable for cell growth. The supply of oxygen or nutrient into the central region of the porous microcarrier seems to be improved by the enlargement of the pore size. More... »
