ABSTRACT

Interaction of grain boundaries and acetone bubbles with the interface microstructure is analyzed during the directional solidification of thin samples of succinonitrile-acetone mixtures. At subboundaries, depending on the growth parameters, cells are associated in pairs to form doublets which may invade the adjacent grains. When the doublets are stable, the selection of cellular spacing is investigated through the time evolution of both the tip and groove spacing distributions. As acetone is volatile, bubbles are often nucleated which grow with an elongated shape, so that solid envelopes get attached to them to form duplex structures. In the beginning of the cellular range, finite amplitude cells are observed only a distance from the bubbles. At higher acetone concentration, highly correlated sidebranches appear and amplify on the duplex structure, which means that a duplex structure can undergo an oscillatory dendritic transition.
