ABSTRACT

The presence of bright cores in galaxies is of considerable interest since they may be the site of current star formation, radio activity, black holes etc.. Probably the best known case is M 87 (NGC 4486) (Young et al., 1978). Recent observations of the core of M 87 in the near IR by Jarvis and Melnick (1990) convincingly show that there is a massive young star cluster as revealed by a large increase in the strength of the Ca triplet lines (a strong indicator of supergiants) and velocity dispersion.
