ABSTRACT

The major classes of Gram-negative bacterial plant pathogens appear to have similar groups of genes determining pathogenicity. At least 60 genes have been identified in Xanthomonas campestris pathovar campestris, a typical necrotrophic pathogen, which are essential for pathogenicity, but dispensable for life in vitro. These genes include 1. structural genes encoding extracellular plant degrading enzymes, 2. genes involved in synthesis of extracellular polysaccharide (EPS), 3. a multigenic secretion system for extracellular enzymes, 4. complex regulatory systems controlling enzyme and EPS synthesis, 5. hrp genes essential for pathogenicity and for ability to induce a hypersensitive response on resistant and non-host plants, 6. an avirulence gene which interacts with Arabidopsis thaliana, and 7. genes whose function is unknown. Brassica plants respond to challenge with Xanthomonas by differential expression of many genes, including genes encoding hydrolases such as ß-1,3 glucanase and chitinases.     44 schema:description The major classes of Gram-negative bacterial plant pathogens appear to have similar groups of genes determining pathogenicity. At least 60 genes have been identified in Xanthomonas campestris pathovar campestris, a typical necrotrophic pathogen, which are essential for pathogenicity, but dispensable for life in vitro. These genes include 1. structural genes encoding extracellular plant degrading enzymes, 2. genes involved in synthesis of extracellular polysaccharide (EPS), 3. a multigenic secretion system for extracellular enzymes, 4. complex regulatory systems controlling enzyme and EPS synthesis, 5. hrp genes essential for pathogenicity and for ability to induce a hypersensitive response on resistant and non-host plants, 6. an avirulence gene which interacts with Arabidopsis thaliana, and 7. genes whose function is unknown. Brassica plants respond to challenge with Xanthomonas by differential expression of many genes, including genes encoding hydrolases such as ß-1,3 glucanase and chitinases. These genes have characteristic expression patterns depending on the nature of the challenging bacterium.
