AUTHORS ABSTRACTDiamond-anvil cells have been simplified and miniaturised to the point where they can be added with little difficulty to a wide range of experiments. This allows high pressure, or the control of interatomic spacing, to be more generally applied in solid state physics than hitherto. The principles of the diamond-anvil cell are presented together with details of its operation in practice.
