ABSTRACT

Theoretical and numerical results are presented for the eddy viscosity of three-dimensional spatially periodic incompressible flow. As shown by Dubrulle and Frisch (1991 Phys. Rev.A43, pp. 5355–5364), the eddy viscosity is actually a fourth order tensor which is generally anisotropic. It is expressible in terms of the solution of auxiliary problems, essentially, three-dimensional linearized Navier-Stokes equations which must be solved numerically. We discovered a flow having a complex eddy viscosity. An instance that can only exist in three or higher dimensions. We also present results for the equilateral ABC-flow (A = B = C = 1), for which we found a negative eddy viscosity instability which appears at R = 1/υ > Rc≃ 1.92. More... »
