ABSTRACT

The symbiotic association between Rhizobium and legumes is specific. For example R. meliloti nodulates Medicago, Melilotus and Trigonella species, R. tropici nodulates Phaseolus and Leucaena, and R. leguminosarum bv viciae ’s hosts belong to the Vicia and Pisum genera (van Rhijn, Vanderleyden, 1995). The bacterial genes controlling nodulation and host specificity (nod, nol and noe genes) have been classified into 3 groups: (i) The regulatory nodD genes activate the expression of the other nodulation genes in response to compounds secreted by the host plants. (ii) The common nodABC genes are found in all rhizobial species studied so far and are considered as functionally conserved between these species, (iii) The species-specific nod genes, such as nodH, nodL or nodFE in R. meliloti, determine the host range. Mutations in the latter genes generally result in an alteration of the host spectrum.
