ABSTRACT

“Of all the plants of the earth the grasses are of the greatest use to the human race. To the grasses belong the cereals, sugarcane, sorghum and the bamboos; and, since they furnish the bulk of the forage for domestic animals, the grasses are also the basis of animal industry” (Hitchcock 1935). These words are at least as true today as they were when written 60 years ago and the primary reason for the high interest in including biotechnological applications in their improvement. As is well known, techniques for various cellular and molecular manipulations for the Gramineae (Poaceae) have been more difficult and hence slower to develop than for species in various other plant families. This is true in spite of the enormous effort expended by numerous laboratories throughout the world. Limitation of space will not permit a comprehensive review of the voluminous literature in this area; therefore, we will present a historical perspective and what we consider to be some of the significant highlights of in vitro culture of species in the Gramineae. Limitation of space will not permit a comprehensive review of the voluminous literature in this area; therefore, we will present a historical perspective and what we consider to be some of the significant highlights of in vitro culture of species in the Gramineae.
