ABSTRACT

High-strength Aℓ-based amorphous alloys have been produced in sub-millimeter thick ribbons (sheets) by single-roller melt-spinning. The excellent glass formability of Aℓ-alloys has been studied by thermal and structural experiments. Amorphous Aℓ-alloy powders can be consolidated to form bulk amorphous or nanocrystalline Aℓ-alloys as high-strength, low-density engineering materials. Submillimeter Mg-(Cu,Ni)-Sn amorphous ribbons with good mechanical properties can also be produced. Recently, refractory metal based rod-shaped samples containing mixtures of amorphous and nanocrystalline phases have been produced by mold casting, and their properties have been studied. Based on these results as well as those from the variety of bulk-glass forming systems reported recently, several key factors for easy vitrification are suggested. More... »
