ABSTRACT

Rhizobia (now classified into three genera RhizobiumBradyrhizobium and Azorhizobium)can elicit the formation of nitrogen-fixing nodules on the roots of selected species of the legume family. Some rhizobia exhibit a narrow host range of nodulation; for example R. meliloti and R. leguminosarum biovar viciae nodulate respectively alfalfa and pea/vetch and not each other’s hosts [see 1]. In contrast Rhizobium sp. NGR234 has a broad host range, nodulating over 70 legume genera and even a non-legume Parasponia [2]. More... »
