ABSTRACT

As a physicist rather than a philosopher, I am not competent to give a philosophical account of how theories are constructed or to reflect deeply on the methodology of scientific creativity. Instead, I wish to describe briefly a particular scientific theory, now only in its formative stage, which attempts to give far-reaching answers to a new class of questions not previously addressed much (if at all) within science. This theory, the Hartle-Hawking ‘no-boundary’ proposal for the quantum state of the universe [1, 2], attempts to predict what the universe is like and not just how it evolves. More... »
