ABSTRACT

In his The Bounds of Sense, An Essay on Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason (London, 1966), P. F. Strawson undertakes the task of disentangling those doctrines of the Critique which depend on Kant’s system — the transcendental idealism — from other, the analytical and descriptive theses contained in the same book but independent of that system. The obviously underlying attitude towards Kant’s great work is that it has “two faces“ — one of which is no longer acceptable or even promising1 and the other “the blander, the more acceptable”2 consisting of doctrines that remain “fruitful and interesting.”3 Strawson recognises that in Kant’s mind these two sets of theses were interdependent, or rather the analytic, descriptive theses were regarded as being dependent upon the thesis of transcendental idealism, but Strawson’s intention is to show that Kant was mistaken in this, that the analytical, descriptive theses may be made to stand on their own and that transcendental idealism cannot be used to support them just because it is in itself an incoherent thesis and also because Kant has not been able to establish it by any convincing argument. Using the distinction made by Strawson in his Individuals (London, 1959), one may say that what he attempts to do is to separate the descriptive from the revisionary parts of the Critique. More... »
