ABSTRACTEnvironmental exposures to pollutants often originate from point sources such as industrial plants or waste sites. Releases from these sources can spread through different environmental media, including air, soil and water. Because point sources are easy to recognise, they can also be easily associated with negative attitudes or fear (Bender et al. 1990). Long-term effects, such as cancers, are often a cause for concern, not least because their long latency periods mean that, by the time they are recognised, it is too late to take avoiding action.
