ABSTRACT

Many of the methods used for ocean data assimilation are of course generic, in particular, techniques for estimation and error propagation, and these methods are adequately discussed elsewhere in this book. Instead we focus on some of the more specific oceanographic aspects. We start with some examples of the practical uses of ocean data assimilation and then look in more detail at the ocean inverse problem for recovering the time mean steady state ocean circulation. The physical constraints and assumptions are very explicit for this problem and similar ideas later turn out to be useful in the time dependent ocean assimilation context. More... »
