ABSTRACT

The aim of this paper is to review and integrate current knowledge relating to the demographic consequences of famine. Initially the role ascribed to famine in some major population theories is summarized and a conceptual framework for examining demographic adjustments to famine is put forward. The remainder of the paper takes the three basic processes of mortality, fertility and population movement in turn and discusses evidence of how they are influenced by the onset of famine. An attempt is made to draw out general tendencies with respect to both the immediate and longer term responses and to the complex interrelationships and interactions between the demographic processes themselves. Finally some suggestions are made regarding the necessity for more focussed research into the demographic effects of famine and the likely benefits of such work to both theory and applied work in developing famine warning systems.
