ABSTRACT

Although a number of earlier histological and electron microscopic studies suggested the presence of monocyte and macrophage-like cells within the glomerulus in various types of glomerulonephritis, recent research in this area was stimulated by the studies of Atkins and his associates (1) who documented the existence of macrophages in the glomeruli of patients with crescentic glomerulonephritis. Since then it has become clear that monocytes infiltrate the glomerulus in many forms of experimental (2) and human (3) glomerulonephritis, that they may directly contribute to glomerular injury as effector cells (2), and that modulation of immunologically-relevant macrophage surface antigens may occur in the course of glomerular injury (2). In this paper we will briefly review published work from our laboratory and detail current studies on the origin and role of infiltrating and resident macrophages in experimental glomerular injury. 35 schema:description Although a number of earlier histological and electron microscopic studies suggested the presence of monocyte and macrophage-like cells within the glomerulus in various types of glomerulonephritis, recent research in this area was stimulated by the studies of Atkins and his associates (1) who documented the existence of macrophages in the glomeruli of patients with crescentic glomerulonephritis.
