ABSTRACT

Most phosphorites occurring on the crests of seamounts, ridges, and other elevated portions of the sea floor appear to be of marine origin, although at least some appear to have originated from the submergence of an insular-type phosphate deposit. The close relationship between iron-manganese crusts and “open-ocean” phosphorites may provide important insights into the mode of deposition of both Fe/Mn crusts and the phosphatic deposits.
