ABSTRACT

Following mutagenesis, strains of Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris showing altered pathogenicity were isolated by screening on turnip seedlings. The mutants grew normally on laboratory media. A “library” of wild-type X. c. campestris DNA was prepared using a broad host range cloning vector (pLAFRl) and recombinant plasmids were identified which restored pathogenicity to certain mutants. In one case evidence was obtained for a cluster of linked pathogenicity genes covering about 10 kb of DNA, and in another case involvement in extracellular enzyme production was apparent. It has not yet been possible to identify cloned sequences which influence the behaviour of X. campestris on non-host plants. More... »
