ABSTRACTNMR spectroscopy provides a unique way of measuring metabolite levels of tissues both in vivo (in living animals) and in vitro (in perchloric acid extracts). This opportunity was applied to the study of the energy metabolism changes by 31P-NMR induced in brain tumors by the neoplastic phenotype as compared to the normal brain metabolism observed in the normal rat brain. Previous studies (2, 5) described, in various kinds of extra-cerebral tumors, changes suggesting hypoxic phenomena and evolving with time along with the growth of the lesion. The present study was aimed at the description of in vivo metabolite patterns of brain tumors grafted on nude mice and at the identification of these metabolites by in vitro high resolution spectroscopy on perchloric acid (PCA) extracts.
