ABSTRACT

Extensive molecular dynamics studies for “one dimensional” aqueous solutions of the alkali metal cations Li+, Na+ and K+ in gramicidin A-like channels, as well as for the water at the membrane surfaces are presented. It is demonstrated that the water structure significantly differs from the bulk water structure in both cases, and that the one dimensional solvation of the ions in the channel plays a key role for ionic transport rates.
