ABSTRACT

The reactions of ground state Al atoms (2Pj) with O2, CO2, SO2 and N2O are studied with a pulsed crossed supersonic molecular beam apparatus. The Al atom beam is generated by laser ablation of the solid at the exit of a pulsed nozzle and seeding in the supersonic expansion of neutral carrier gases. Velocities ranging from 800 to 3400 ms-1 are thus obtained. Al atoms are probed, together with the product AlO, by laser-induced fluorescence. The effects of the reagent relative translational energy on the relative reactive cross-sections and AlO internal energy distributions are studied. All the vibrational and rotational distributions found are governed by statistical behaviour at low collision energy and show a lack of excitation at high collision energy. More... »
