ABSTRACT

Root growth, foliage growth, water relations, photosynthesis and nutrient uptake of potato crops in relation to biotic stress caused by short crop rotations are discussed. The influence of minor and major pathogens on these crop characteristics are reviewed from literature while illustrations are taken from the crop rotation experiment “De Schreef”. Comparing a rotation in which potato occur once in six years with three year rotations in which potatoes are preceeded by grass seed or by sugarbeet showed effects on root length density, on leaf area index, NPK uptake and yield reduction due to the combined effect of biotic stress and drought. It is concluded that large gaps remain in our understanding of how biotic stress is brought about in potato crops. A better understanding of the underlying mechanisms of damage may emanate from crop physiological research including both biotic and abiotic stress factors. More... »
