ABSTRACT

The members of the genus Brassica,B.juncea and B.campestris are the main crucifers grown in India for edible oil. Substantial losses in yield occur due to susceptibility of cultivated varieties to diseases, such as white rust caused by Albugocandida and alternaria blight caused by Alternariabrassiceae, aphids and drought. Wide hybridization can be used to transfer desirable agronomical traits from wild allies of Brassicas into the cultivated varieties. However, due to crossability barriers the hybrid embryos abort during early stages of development. We have recently obtained a fertile, amphidiploid intergeneric hybrid between Erucasativa, which is tolerant to drought, white rust and aphids, and B.campestris by embryo rescue (1). The studies on wide hybridization has now been extended to interspecific hybridization between B.spinescens (2n=16), a dwarf plant with thick dark green leaves and tolerant to white rust and alternaria blight and B.campestris (2n=20).
