ABSTRACT

There have been many studies published on aspects of large-scale culture of plant cells. However, large-scale culture has been defined quite differently by the various authors, ranging from a few liters to about 70 m3. In fact, it appears that some authors interpret large-scale cultures primarily as cultures directed to a commercial aim, whereas others emphasize ‘large’. These interpretations do not always correlate. If somebody should force a break-through in the production of vincristine by cell cultures of Catharanthus roseus increasing the productivity per liter of culture to the level obtained with commercial shikonin production, a rather small 2-1 bioreactor would be quite sufficient for commercial production. On the other hand, probably the largest bioreactors especially designed for plant cell cultures (1) are primarily aimed at process development. More... »
