ABSTRACTMonuments built from different sandstones of the Triassic were analysed for microorganisms. Fungal colonies of the individual inoculates were isolated and identified. The species composition as well as the abundance of individual species are discussed. Light and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) revealed the mode and pattern of colonization of the uppermost stone layer by fungi. The strains were analysed for their capacity for acid production on various carbohydrate sources. Their capacity for manganese oxidation and deposition of manganese oxides were also examined. This pattern, which in some cases is indicative of iron transfer and precipitation, is discussed in relation to crust formation and exfoliation. More... »
