ABSTRACT

In the introduction, in part of historical nature, the author reminds the main properties forseen by Albert Einstein, in the frame of the theory of General Relativity, for the gravitation waves (g.w.), their propagation in space and emission from moving mechanical systems.Their polarization states and action on mechanical systems (mechanical detectors) are discussed in Sect.2, while their possible astrophysical sources are briefly mentioned in Sect.3. The main features of two types of mechanical detectors i.e. laser interferometers and resonant bars are described in Sect.4, while Sect.5 contains a survey of the procedures used for collecting and handling the experimental data provided by a resonant bar. Sect.6 presents a few remarks about the quantum limits to this type of measurements and the procedures invented for their circumvention. Finally the present state of the art is summarized in Sect7 and the future programmes are sketched in Sect.8. More... »

30 schema:description In the introduction, in part of historical nature, the author reminds the main properties forseen by Albert Einstein, in the frame of the theory of General Relativity, for the gravitation waves (g.w.), their propagation in space and emission from moving mechanical systems.Their polarization states and action on mechanical systems (mechanical detectors) are discussed in Sect.2, while their possible astrophysical sources are briefly mentioned in Sect.3.
