ABSTRACT

In the past, emphasis has been placed on the accurate diagnosis, monitoring and antiarrhythmic therapy of acute myocardial infarction. This approach could have been appropriate in an era when therapy was primarily directed on the prevention of complications. In patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI), therapy is now directed toward the early use of thrombolytic agents in order to achieve coronary reperfusion. Several clinical studies have demonstrated that a sustained reperfusion of a coronary artery can preserve left ventricular function reducing the infarct size [1–7]. Thus, imaging techniques able to accurately visualize the size and the extent of myocardial damage could play a predominant role in the emergency room [8].
