ABSTRACT

We have demonstrated genetic variation for salt tolerance in triticales. The level of tolerance, particularly in some of the Polish germplasm, exceeds that of wheat and is comparable, if not superior, to that of tritipyrums (primary amphiploids between hexaploid wheat and the highly tolerant Thinopyrum spp.). As far as we can tell, the tolerant triticales have not been subjected to deliberate selection under saline conditions. Since these triticales have been bred for productivity in a cropping environment, we suggest that triticale should be considered as a primary cereal for saline-affected soils, in preference to attempts to develop tritipyrum as a salt tolerant cereal.
