ABSTRACTWe have investigated the quantum intensity noise of free-running, cavity- extended, and injection-locked single mode laser diodes at room temperature. No squeezing was observed for free-running diodes, while the two line narrowing techniques yielded a measured intensity squeezing of about 1.4 dB below shot noise. However, we have observed that the intensity noise of such nominally “single mode” laser diodes results from a cancellation effect between large anticorrelated fluctuations of the main mode and of many weak longitudinal side modes. Therefore, depending on the line narrowing technique which is used, the observed noise reduction may not be single mode squeezing. More... »
