ABSTRACT

There are vast forests in Belorus, Russia and Ukraine which are severely contaminated because of nuclear accidents in Chernobyl or the Kyshtym region. The wood which can be harvested from these forests is an important source of income for these countries. Because high radioactivity levels in wood limit its applicability, and thus its price, it is worthwhile to evaluate strategies which can be applied to reduce radiocontamination. Moreover, forests form a source for numerous forest products such as mushrooms, game and berries. Finally a forest serves as an area for recreation. More... »
