ABSTRACT

There are many potentially useful applications of protoplast fusion, in both somatic cell genetics and in biotechnology [eg 1,2]. The two main approaches to fusing plant protoplasts are based either on chemical or electrical procedures. Chemical fusion of protoplasts will be described elsewhere in this volume [3]. Given the availability of suitable equipment, the advantage of electrofusion, a physical approach, over chemical fusion is that it is rapid, simple, synchronous and more easily controlled, and the use of high concentrations of potentially cytotoxic chemical fusogens are avoided [4].
