ABSTRACT

This chapter brings to scientific discussion cultural data from the research on interpersonal forgiveness, using Enright’s theory on the socio-moral development of forgiveness. It voices an interesting debate about the power and specificity of culture upon it, questioning if the necessary conditions for forgiveness are culture specific. The comparison of results of forgiveness measures in different nations connects with the phases of the interpersonal forgiveness model and the socio-moral developmental patterns of forgiveness to give form to an answer to that question. The chapter ends with a description of an intervention to promote forgiveness in schools. Julio R. Neto, Robert Enright, Bruna Siebel, and Silvia Koller, a team that includes Brazilians and a North American researcher, wrote it. More... »
