ABSTRACT

The prodigious developments in medical and basic science knowledge during the last decade have increased our understanding of the complex physiological disturbances that characterize critical illness. This is particularly true in the field of endocrine physiology, in which the application of molecular biology techniques has rapidly improved our comprehension of the hormonal response to critical illness. The aim of this review is to describe important aspects of the hypothalamo-pituitary-axis response in critically ill injured patients, with a particular focus on the interactions between endocrine and metabolic functions.
