ABSTRACTThis article introduces a standard training curriculum for beginners in colonoscopic examination. The purpose of this curriculum was the stable acquisition of techniques through short-term clinical experience, as compared with the learning curve for acquiring the techniques through conventional training methods. The curriculum was based on a three-step approach. Step 1 focuses on the acquisition of basic knowledge needed to perform colonoscopy. In step 2, basic techniques required for colonoscope insertion are acquired, using a colon model. Training with the use of a colon model has the most important role in this curriculum, which gives an overview of the technical skills required for colonoscope insertion and lists important points according to the segment of the colon. In step 3, the scope should pass through the sigmoid-desending junction (SDJ) within 15 min and reach the cecum within 20 min, with an insertion rate of 80%. The curriculum describes the details of training for beginners and provides specific goals. It also provides teaching doctors with guidelines for instruction and training. It is concluded that this curriculum should be useful for training of colonoscope insertion skills. More... »
