ABSTRACT

An algorithm for displaying multi—isosurfaces from data sets in 3D space is presented. The precise locations of isosurfaces or region boundary surfaces are determined by the data values of resampling points on rays cast from each pixel on the screen. The isosurfaces coordinates are the intersection points between the casting rays and the isosurfaces. The local gradients and the shading intensities are only calculated at intersection points rather than at all other resampling points. The final image is generated by composing the shading intensities and opacities along each ray. Two approaches to improve the efficiency of the algorithm are discussed.
